While working part-time in the corporate world, Lya honed her writing skills by interning at two Massachusetts alternative publications: In Newsweekly - a weekly newspaper - then at Edge Publications, Inc. - a daily online magazine.
At the print internship, her stories were very diverse. She wrote political and religious pieces to pop culture trends and theater articles.
At the online internship, she wrote profiles - such as on actress Daniela Sea of Showtime’s The L Word - as well as wrote reviews on restaurants, books, and DVDs. For both internships, her beat was covering the GLBT community.
Lya is currently freelancing to stay up-to-date. Her most recent assignment was covering the appearance of MTV’s Shot of Love firefighter turned reality celebrity, Dani Campbell - who was in Boston, Mass., on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008 - for the alternative newspaper BayWindows.
Another assignment that she also covered was a fashion event that was held in Boston, Mass., for the alternative magazine Curve. The fashion event showcased the new line for an up and coming apparel company and it was coined as an evening of entertainment with two artists, i.e., a musical theater group as well as a hip hop group. She wrote about the event, the fashion show, and profiled the company. This article is in the September 2008 issue of Curve magazine.
Lya has a master’s from Emerson College in communications with a concentration in broadcast journalism and a bachelor’s in Spanish from Wellesley College. In addition, she has taken a print journalism class (at Harvard University), a memoir class, a travel writing class, and a food writing class. Moreover, she is proficient in various software programs, desktop publishing, and general Web site maintenance. Finally, she is not only diligent and persistent but also committed to the public, to the principles of journalism, and to writing quality articles.
